Businessman and philanthropist, Mike Terry developed a strong work ethic in his early teens when he began work at his father’s pest control business. By age 18, Mike was certified in every category the pest control industry had to offer in the state of Texas. After his father’s death, Mike convinced his mother to let him operate the family business at only 26 years old. From 1972 to 1997, Mike owned and operated the company, increasing its annual revenues from $500,000 to $16 million and employing more than 200 people. Under Mike’s leadership, he turned the family pest control business into a leading business force in North Texas known as Terminix, Inc.
After selling Terminix, Inc. in the late 1990’s, Mike served as a shareholder and board member of The Container Store. In addition, Mike was an original shareholder of Chief Oil & Gas from 1994 until its sale in 2006. Today, his investment firm, M. Terry Enterprises, manages holdings in oil and gas, real estate, banking, ranching and other private ventures.
Despite his busy work schedule, Mike continues to find time to give back to the community. In 1999, he became a trustee of the Jesuit Foundation and from 2005 – 2007 he served as chairman of the Jesuit Foundation. He was also a trustee for The Children’s Education Fund, University of Dallas and Ursuline Academy Foundation. Mike also serves on the boards of The St. Anthony School, Jesuit College Preparatory School Board, Teach for America, St. Paul Medical Foundation and is on the Advisory Council for The Catholic Foundation. Mike has also been involved with several fundraising campaigns for Ursuline Academy, St. Rita Catholic School, St. Anthony School and served as the co-chair the Jesuit Capital Campaign “We Are Jesuit” as well as honorary chairman for the Diocese of Dallas – Capital & Endowment Campaign.
From his early years, Mike knew the importance of giving back and was especially concerned with the state of the homeless in the community. In 2006, he and his wife founded The Mike & Mary Terry Family Foundation, a Christian-based private 501(c)(3) organization. The Foundation is dedicated to investing in Dallas area initiatives designed to make an impact in the lives of children and the poverty-stricken. The Foundation focuses on three core areas: providing equal opportunities for all children, advancing youth through education and ensuring a haven for those in need.
Mike is committed to using his business skills to grow The Mike & Mary Terry Family Foundation to make a difference to those in need. The Foundation seeks to ensure that children receive the care and education they deserve and that the homeless have the opportunities and resources to escape a life of poverty.
Mike is a graduate of the University of North Texas and holds a degree in Business Administration (Banking and Finance). Mike and Mary Terry live in Dallas and attend St. Rita Catholic Church. Together they have three children: Melissa, Michael, and Travis, one son-in-law, Dustin Pridmore and three grandchildren.
